MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
MASSAGE TECHNIQUES (UK Qualification)
Successful candidates will be awarded the I.T.E.C. DIPLOMA in MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
A 21 week combination course comprising both theoretical and practical elements.
The theoretical element introduces level 3 anatomy, physiology and pathology to provide students with a basic understanding of the human body and provides the administrative knowledge necessary to set up in business.
This comprises five modules - Unit 340 Provide Body Massage for Complementary Therapies - Unit 346 Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies - Unit 348 Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies - Unit 350 Health, Safety and Hygiene for Complementary Therapies (The Anatomy & Physiology module is also awarded Diploma status in its own right)
Approximately one half of each class period is devoted to theoretical study. Theoretical home study should be undertaken in order to consolidate class work. Theoretical multi-choice tests are given as homework as part of course assessment.
The practical element introduces the techniques of massage - effleurage, petrissage, etc. and goes on to teach a full body treatment in Holistic Massage.
Approximately one half of each class period is devoted to practical work. A tutor will demonstrate the techniques to be learned; students will then practice those techniques upon each other under supervision.
SYLLABUS
Study of the body systems:
CELLS & TISSUES, MUSCULAR, NEUROLOGICAL, SKELETAL, VASCULAR, LYMPHATIC, SKIN
DIGESTIVE, GENITO-URINARY, RESPIRATORY and ENDOCRINE
- Definition - the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes- Functions of the skin and common skin diseases - Cells - structure and functions
- The history, theory and philosophy of body massage - Definition and purposes of massage
- Psychological and physiological effects of massage - Contraindications to massage
- An introduction to the other Natural Therapies - The Holistic approach - treating the whole person
- Classical massage movements
Effleurage: Petrissage: Frictions:Tapotement: Vibrations. - Client Care and Modesty - Towel Draping
- Massage medium - oil, cream and talc. - How to set up a practice
- Home visiting - Record keeping
- Taking case histories
ITEC HOLISTIC MASSAGE EXAMINATION CRITERIA
Case study work
ITEC require a total of 18 recorded treatments to be completed. These are seen by the practical examiner for final grading.
Practical Examination
Full body massage with repetitive movements curtailed. Duration approximately 45 minutes
Oral Questions (as part of the practical exam)
At the discretion of the Practical Examiner
Theory Examination
Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology have a one-hour, 50 question, multi-choice exam
Examination of Unit 348 & Unit 350 is in the form of written assignments which are seen by the practical examiner for final grading.
COURSE TIMES
Weekly Holistic Massage classes are held over one, four hour period per week for 21 weeks.
Day or evening classes are held on Mondays.
Day classes only are held on Thursdays.
Courses commence in February/March or September
Day classes are held between 10.00am and 2.00pm,
Evening classes are held between 6.00pm and 10.00pm.
Weekend Holistic Massage classes are held over one weekend per month for five months.
9.00am to 5.00pm Saturday and Sunday
(months 1 to 4 are generally held on the 3rd or 4th weekend, month 5 is held on the 2nd weekend)
To satisfy ITEC requirements students of all Holistic Massage courses will be required to attend an additional five tutorial sessions. These will be held on Saturday afternoons between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm. If it is not possible to attend these sessions additional classroom time will be made available.
