ITEC DIPLOMA IN ON-SITE MASSAGE
This course is held conjointly with Indian Head Massage Students may sit either examination or both
This course is designed so that graduates may help to relieve stress and assist clients in the management of their own stress levels
Successful candidates will be awarded I.T.E.C ON-SITE MASSAGE CERTIFICATE
Eligible Students - ITEC graduates and members of caring professions, nurses, social workers, leisure industry members, beauty therapists provided they have qualified in ITEC Holistic Massage or its equivalent.
Study to include:
. Knowledge of the 'fight or flight' syndrome including the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system, the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal hormones involved.
. Knowledge of the common causes of stress, to include: Health . Financial . Personal relationships . Physical. . Home based . Work related . Environmental Explain integral biology Discuss how the body is affected by the following factors: . Environmental . Social . Economic
. Explain the physical signs and symptoms that stress can produce Explain the psychological signs and symptoms that stress can produce Describe the effect that stress can have on all the systems of the body Explain how diet and nutrition can affect stress levels Understand the effects of food intolerances. (E numbers, additives, artificial preservatives) Explain the effect of caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and other 'quick fixes' on the body Describe how physical exercise affects stress levels
. The Treatment of Stress to include: Complementary methods: . Music . Colour . Massage . Relaxation . Meditation . Reflexology . Aromatherapy .Yoga. Demonstrate the ability to empathise with clients suffering from stress Complete a consultation card for a stress treatment Describe how client stress levels can be evaluated using questionnaires Describe common coping strategies to include: . Diet . Exercise . Time management. Delegation Describe the effects of positive and negative thought patterns Describe the importance of sleep. List the different types of sleep patterns. Demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of a stress management treatment Explain referral procedures to: . GP . Counselling . Alternative/Complementary Therapies
. Seated massage to relieve muscular tension concentrating on hands, wrists, lower arms, neck, base of skull, and shoulders. (Effleurage, kneading and petrissage).
ON-SITE MASSAGE (UNIT 5) EXAMINATION CRITERIA
Case Studies:
Five individuals to be treated with complete client records.
Practical Examination:
To include consultation, massage of neck, shoulders, hands and lower arms as directed by the Examiner.
Oral Questions:
At the discretion of the Practical Examiner
Theory Examination:
2 hour, 50 question, multi-choice examination in Unit 5 On-site Massage
Students may also sit Indian Head Massage exam
COURSE TIMES
On-site Massage/Indian Head Massage classes are held over 21 weeks 6.00pm to 10.00pm Thursday Courses commence in February or September
